Introduction to CMMI for DevelopmentCourse Summary
This three-day course introduces systems and software engineering managers and practitioners, appraisal team members, and process group (e.g., SEPG, EPG) members to to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) fundamental concepts. CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) models are tools that help organizations improve their ability to develop and maintain quality products and services. CMMI-DEV models are an integration of best practices from proven discipline-specific process improvement models, including the CMM for Software, EIA 731, and the Integrated Product Development CMM.
The course is composed of lectures and class exercises with ample opportunity for participant questions and discussions. After attending the course, participants will be able to describe the components of CMMI-DEV models and their relationships, discuss the process areas in CMMI-DEV models, and locate relevant information in the model.
The course fulfills a prerequisite requirement for any course requiring an official SEI Introductory CMMI course.

What You'll Learn
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
 |
Describe the components of the CMMI (goals, practices, required vs. expected components, etc.) and how they work together |
 |
Discuss each of the 22 process areas in the model |
 |
Know where to find information in the model, whether you're involved in a process improvement initiative or on an appraisal team |

Every teacher of the Introduction to CMMI course is required by the SEI to present the exact same slides in the exact same order. In fact, viewing each and every slide is the criterion for completing the course. Without the creativity and personality of a talented instructor, the slide set would be a prescription for what is often described as Death by PowerPoint. Let’s face it; process improvement suffers from poor plot structure, shallow character development, and predictable outcomes.
Instead, Ron uses hands-on exercises and practical examples, anecdotes, and, yes, unmitigated sea stories to lighten the load, clarify the concepts, and add a modicum of fun to an otherwise serious but dry topic. The optional “brown-bag” lunch sessions not only simplify CMMI but provide useful tools for what to next after class is over.
